Where is the COVID-19? – Healthcare Economist

Paper written by Ahmad and Anderson JAMA last spring examined the cause of death in the US. Below are the charts in terms of the number of deaths and the number of deaths. The information comes from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) National Vital Statistics System (NVSS).

The most important thing you need to know is the advent of COVID-19. More than 1 in 10 deaths in the US in 2020 (10.3%) were due to COVID-19. Based on this, COVID-19 killed almost twice as many deaths from stroke (cause # 5) and approximately 6.5 the number of deaths from flu and pneumonia combined. In 2021, one can expect a smaller death due to COVID-19 due to the advent of vaccines, but this contradicts the fact that COVID-19 was widespread in 2021 compared to starting in March 2020.

Another thing to note is that we find that the mortality rate due to heart disease and cancer often decreases over time, especially cancer. Also, although we have concerns about dementia in 2020, we are seeing a slight decrease in suicides in 2020, although this may be due to the increased risk of death due to COVID-19.

It will be important to monitor how these numbers change as we move into 2022.
